Let Food Be Thy Medicine

I love cooking. Food has a way of uniting people across time and space and transcends beliefs and politics! When was the last time you heard a tomato argue with a fig about which is better? Of course not. Each ingredient has its place in the recipe to make the dish, as a whole, come alive with flavor and aroma.

There are few things that all people need in common. In fact they cannot exist for long without them. Food, I would say, is at the top of that list. Birthrights have been sold for it. Kingdoms are decimated by lack of it. Nations have gone to war to own more of it. Food has the power to unite people around a common table and bring wholeness to the partakers in this communal act of sharing a simple meal.

Food is a common necessity but what  kind of food? Nutrient dense soils and foods that truly nourish the body and soul. We need to know what foods are good to eat and which to avoid. And we need to know how to cook them correctly and how to eat them if we want to gain value from any meal.

I am going  to attempt to share that here in this space along with menu plans and recipes and kosher clean eating. It is not as hard or terrible as it sounds and it is a mitzvot( command )from YHVH so it can only be of benefit to our lives and health. Adoni says His yoke is easy and His burden is light. In other words His mitzvot are not so hard for us to do.

Before you go away thinking this is some sort of legalistic heresy placing people right back under the law or some strange diet fad let me say that could not be further from the truth! If I still have your attention then let me begin at the beginning of this story of food. Let me take you back to the book of Bereshit ( Genesis ) where YHVH created all that we know and cannot know in the natural realm around us. In Bereshit 1: 29 Adoni speaks to the ish, Adam, He created and after breathing life into him He placed him into the gan eden( Garden of Eden )and commanded him "Behold, I have given you every seed-bearing herb that is upon all the earth, and every tree that has seed-bearing fruit; they shall be yours for food."  It should then come to you as no surprise that plants are the second most abundant living organisms on the earth. The second are microorganisms that, while they serve many purposes in the natural world, they play a crucial part in building the healthy soils and ecosystems plants need to thrive.

Later in Bereshit we learn of a man named Noah And Adonis command to build an ark and taking with him his family and 7 of all clean animals and two of each kind not meant to be for food. G_d will later tell him that of the clean animals he and his family may eat but not of the others they are not for food. Fast forward to Moses and YHVH begins to teach the people His dietary laws. later these will become the Kosher laws. Science today is showing that these dietary laws and how we prepare our foods actually does have an effect on our health so perhaps the One who created our bodies also knew what was best for us to eat? We have a long standing complaint that our bodies didn't come with a users guide yet if we take the time to read the Torah we find that we do have instructions.

We will look more closely at these practices as well as many other traditional practices about food as we learn how our diet affects our health and our quality of life. I hope that this ever expanding library from our kitchen will bring a new sense of joy into your home!
